Construction of the Viiratsi biomethane plant has been completed, and the plant is ready. The agricultural biomethane production plant built by Bioforce Viiratsi OÜ is located in Viiratsi, Viljandi Parish, Estonia. The plant produces biomethane from animal by-products through anaerobic digestion, providing a renewable fuel for the transport sector.
Funding
The project “Viiratsi biomethane plant investment grant” (project no. 20.8.02.24-0006) received EUR 4,999,800 from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU) under the measure “Investment grant for increasing biomethane production and use”, administered by the Environmental Investment Centre (KIK) in cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture. Project cost: EUR 11,455,900; the overall project investment is approx. EUR 30 million.
Project results
- The plant uses approx. 227,000 tonnes of feedstock per year and produces nearly 117 GWh of biomethane per year;
- all biomethane produced is directed to the transport sector;
- the project reduces methane emissions and is an example of the circular economy, turning waste into green energy.
Project status
The plant is complete. The KIK-funded project ended on 30 June 2026.
